Young Learners English (YLE) Exams

Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers are Young Learners English exams which measure a child’s English proficiency over a consistent period of time. It is meant to make English fun for children so that they are motivated to work towards earning Cambridge ‘shields’ that record their progress.

All three levels demonstrate the child’s ability to handle the basics of four core English skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Exam Components

Candidates are assessed in four key areas at each level – listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Pre A1 Starters

About 45 minutes

Paper 1 Reading and Writing: approximately 20 minutes

Paper 2 Listening: approximately 20 minutes

Paper 3 Speaking: 3-5 minutes

This level demonstrates that the child is able to read and understand simple short stories, write short sentences, speak about basic descriptions, follow short spoken conversations and more.

A1 Movers

About 60 minutes

Paper 1 Reading and Writing: approximately 30 minutes

Paper 2 Listening: approximately 25 minutes

Paper 3 Speaking: 5-7 minutes

This level demonstrates that the child is able to understand simple spoken dialogues, communicate with others using short phrases, read and understand short factual texts and more.

A2 Flyers

About 75 minutes

Paper 1 Reading and Writing: approximately 40 minutes

Paper 2 Listening: approximately 25 minutes

Paper 3 Speaking: 7-9 minutes

This level demonstrates that the child is able to write and tell short stories using their own ideas, understand longer sentences and understand slightly broader questions and conversations on everyday topics.
